I am aware that lead poisoning is not high on your health care agenda, but it should be! I support GoLeadFree.org because I am part of a grass-roots coalition working on eliminating environmental lead and the lead poisoning of wildlife and people. Millions of animals a year are poisoned by lead, and recent studies show that over 150 MILLION people in this country have psychiatric illness due to lead poisoning from leaded gasoline exposure years ago. We need to prioritize EDUCATION, RESEARCH, and LEADERSHIP to meet this underappreciated Challenge:

1. EDUCATION -- We need to EDUCATE the public on the dangers of lead in the environment, and the use of lead for bullets and fishing tackle, and we STILL need to remove lead pipes from cities, homes, and public housing! There's even lead in OTC protein supplements!

2. RESEARCH -- We need more RESEARCH on defining where lead poisoning is the worst, along with the best ways to reduce it. Birds are dying, and kids and adults are ending up with permanent neurologic injury that can remain undiagnosed for years, long after it is possible to treat. Even many OTC protein supplements contain lead!

3. LEADERSHIP -- We need LEADERSHIP from out elected officials as well as community involvement to solve these issues. YOUR support is IMPORTANT to us! We are bipartisan and we want to prevent lead poisoning, whatever the source. This is a public health and environmental health issue.
